Sad news: Peter Riley

10 Jan 2023

Sad news to report on the passing of Peter Riley, former player, long time Honorary Secretary and Life Vice-President of the Club.

Peter joined the club in April 1977. On the pitch, he was known for his fairly gentle, deceiving left arm swing bowling, but it was off the pitch where he had the greatest impact and will be best remembered for, from his time involved with Southborough Cricket Club.

Peter joined the Committee in the November 1978 AGM and held various roles on the Committee from that time, including Pavilion Manager and Team Secretary before he finally stood down just short of 20 years serving on the Committee. At the AGM of 2000 he kindly stood as Honorary Secretary, a role he held until he stepped down in late 2022.

He also took an active role in the Colts section, coaching for over 10 years and was instrumental as part of the coaches’ team at that time. All that he did for the Club was done with unassuming modesty, and was such a help to the Club.

The Club has lost an amazingly loyal and devoted servant. Thoughts are with Margaret, his son Graham and family.

The service is taking place at 11am on Tuesday 24 January, in the Chapel at Tunbridge Wells Crematorium. Please contact the Chair by return, if you are interested in attending.
